Survival Skills for Children in the AI Era

For two hundred years, school has been built on a single assumption: knowledge is scarce.

Scarce things must be transported. So we built classrooms to transport knowledge from the people who had it to the children who didn't. We graded children on how much of it arrived intact. We called the ones who could repeat it back good students.

That assumption just died.

Your child can now ask a machine anything — and get an answer that is instant, articulate, and free. Not a search result. An answer. The cost of knowing something has fallen further in the past four years than in the previous four hundred.

Here is the uncomfortable part: school hasn't noticed. It is still grading the thing that just became free. It is still training children to be answerers, in the first era of human history where answering is no longer scarce.

What becomes scarce when answers are free

Economics has a simple rule: when one thing becomes cheap, the things that work alongside it become precious. When answers became free, these became the new scarce skills:

Questions
The machine answers anything — but it sits in silence until someone asks. The quality of what your child gets out of this era will be set by the quality of what they ask of it.
Judgment
The machine is brilliant and it is confidently wrong, sometimes in the same sentence. A child who cannot ask "is this true? who says so? why would they say it?" is not using AI. AI is using them.
Taste
When making things is free, knowing what is worth making is the whole game.
Will
Answers don't act. Somebody still has to want something, start something, finish something, and get back up when it fails.
Attention
The same machines that answer your child's questions are engineered to consume your child's focus. A child who cannot hold their own attention owns none of the other skills — they rent them.

None of these are on the report card.

We are not against AI

Read our name carefully. Human before AI is not humans versus AI. It is a sequence — which thing you build first.

Build the human first — the questioner, the judge, the maker — and AI becomes the most extraordinary amplifier a child has ever had. Skip that step, and the amplifier has nothing to amplify. The most important work of this decade doesn't happen in the model. It happens in the child.

That's also why we won't sell you fear. Your child is not behind. Your child is not broken. The game changed, that's all — and children, given the chance, are surprisingly good at new games.

The one question that changes everything

The physicist Isidor Rabi won a Nobel Prize. Asked how he became a scientist, he credited his mother. Every other parent in his neighbourhood asked their children the same thing after school: what did you learn today?

His mother asked:

"Did you ask a good question today?"

That single substitution — asking over learning — is the smallest possible version of everything this page has argued. You could start tonight, at dinner. It costs nothing. It changes what your child believes their mind is for.

What we built

We build The Saturday Conundrum: a weekly ritual for children aged 8–11 and the adults who love them. Every Saturday, a story that doesn't add up. Characters your child must interrogate to get at the truth — played by an AI that answers, bluffs, and slips, but never lectures. A trail to chase. A thing to make with their hands. Then, a week later, the facts come out — together with the one question that would have cracked the case sooner. What the facts mean stays open, because it always does. And a log where their questions, week by week, visibly grow up.

Three complete conundrums are free, and they stay free. Nothing in them is trimmed — the whole Saturday, Debrief included. What we charge for is the ritual that follows: a new conundrum every week, more questions to spend on it, and the log that keeps them.

Because when answers are free, we raise the children who ask.
